Reddit Sync is probably the best Reddit app for Android right now

Reddit Sync is probably the best Reddit app for Android right now

April 30, 2013 at 06:10PM

I like Reddit a lot. I'm subscribed to a couple of groups (called subreddits) that I follow closely including Android Dev, Technology or Firefox Add-ons. The customization options are great as it limits posts on the site to topics of interest. So, no cat or funny images for me as I'm not subscribed to those groups. While I use Reddit on the desktop PC most of the time, I sometimes also use it on mobile devices that I own to read the latest news and topics of interest while I'm on the go.

Reddit Sync is available as a free (with ads) and pro application for the Android operating system that helps me get the most out of Reddit almost effortlessly. You can use the application without having an account, but the real strength only comes to light after you sign in to your account.

The application immediately displays the groups you are subscribed to in an easy to browse interface. Each article is listed with its title, the number of comments, points it has accumulated and links on the right that either lead to a web destination if the article links to another website, or the description posted by the original thread starter. What is interesting in this regard is that it is displayed right on the screen  if that is the case without any further loading going on.

A smart toolbar can be displayed right underneath each article with a tap on the triangle in the bottom right corner of it. You can use it to vote for the post, star or hide it, open the profile of the user who posted it, open it on Reddit using a mobile browser, or use Android's sharing options to share it.

The top bar displays the groups you are subscribed to giving you the option to switch between them directly to browse only posts of a group of interest. The settings icon on the top right lets you switch between "what's hot, new, rising, top or controversial" posts in that group. The two remaining icons there refresh the posts and let you add text, link or photo posts of your own to Reddit.

A tap on a post opens its comment thread on the device. A smart toolbar is displayed here as well, providing you with the means reply to a comment or leave a new comment. The image browser displays one image at a time. Swipe to the left or right to browse the remaining images of the gallery.

The subreddits listing on the frontpage displays a different menu to you. Here you can subscribe to new groups that you are interested in.

The preferences that you can open here list many different options from searching Reddit to opening saved articles, open messages that you have received, switch to fullscreen mode or open the settings where you can change preferences such as the message check interval (set to 30 minutes by default), how many comments are displayed on threads initially (15 by default, up to all possible) or change the color scheme and font used.

NSFW posts are not filtered by default, which you can enable here. You may also want to look at the privacy section at the bottom of the preferences. The app makes use Google Analytics and bug tracking which you can disable both here.

The app offers many comfortable options that you will probably come to like. From watching YouTube videos in the app over viewing Imgur galleries inline as well to saving images automatically to Google Drive if available.
